ReidsonFilm are still AWOL… on holiday. Following this week’s review of The Harder They Come we have been delving deep into Jamaica’s music scene.
Historically famous for its contribution to sport - 87 Olympic medals from a population of just three million, and the birthplace of both the fastest man and woman on earth - this Caribbean island is also the wellspring of six genres of music: mento, ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub, and dancehall. And that’s not to mention the invention of the sound system, popularised by the likes of Prince Buster, Coxsone Dodd, and policeman turned producer, Duke Reid, who had two pistols tucked in his waistband during recording sessions. No relation, as far as we know.
