That was the director of Some Like it Hot, Billy Wilder. He won seven Oscars, but never got one for Best Foreign Film.
Hello all, it is 2024 and welcome to the ReidsonFilm Season Two Awards. Here in South London it is cold and (very) wet so what better to do than spend an afternoon chatting about the films we have watched over the last six months. We are just one week short of our first year of churning out or rather, elegantly fashioning, our thoughtfully considered deep dives into the world of the enchanting art form that is cinema.
It has been an enjoyable, exciting, and adventurous odyssey that we hope will continue. So without further ado, please join us in our podcast studio for the highlights of Season Two…
This time around we decided to focus on just four Award categories to allow for a more considered reflection. To hear the winners you will have to tune in to our discussion but the categories are listed below.
Best Picture
Up for discussion was Chungking Express, Joyland, and The Wailing, but there really was only ever going to be one winner:
Best Actor
Always a very competitive category this one. Fighting it out were Bob Hoskins (The Long Good Friday), Setsuko Hara and Chishū Ryū (Late Spring), Elia Suleiman (Divine Intervention), Takeshi Kitano (Hana-bi) and of course:
Arnold Schwarzenegger (Jingle All the Way) didn’t quite make the shortlist…
Best Cinematography
A challenging technical category for which our resident filmmaker provides an explainer. We had plenty of candidates for the Award:
The Conformist
Woman in the Dunes
Remainder
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
Neptune Frost
Hagazussa
Best Music
Well, it came down to a square off between two films:
Woman in the Dunes v Amazing Grace
But of course, you can judge for yourself by plugging in to the ReidsonRecord playlist.
Thank you for listening to Reids on Film. If you enjoy our reviews please share with a friend and do leave a comment.
